    Habitat for Humanity of East Jefferson County is proud to host its first annual Veterans Build, a special week of service that brings veterans, military families, and community supporters together to build homes and strengthen connections across East Jefferson County.  

    As housing costs rise, safe and affordable housing remains out of reach for too many local households, including veterans and military families. Veterans Build honors the legacy of military service through meaningful, hands-on action while raising awareness of one of our community's most urgent needs. 

    Help us create affordable homeownership opportunities and demonstrate the power of service, solidarity, and shared purpose. 

    We are grateful for the support of our community partners, including the Port Townsend Elks Lodge #317, Port Townsend Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post 26, and Bruce F. Matheson Post 7498 Veterans of Foreign Wars, whose partnership is helping make this inaugural event possible.

    Work side-by-side on Habitat homes, learn more about affordable housing in East Jefferson County, and connect with others who are committed to making a lasting impact in our community. No construction experience is necessary. 

    Whether you are a veteran, a family member, an active-duty servicemember, or a community supporter, Veterans Build offers an opportunity to honor service through action while helping local families achieve affordable homeownership.

    What to Expect 

    * Work alongside experienced Habitat site supervisors on real construction tasks. 
    * Tasks are matched to your comfort level, with guidance provided every step of the way. 
    * All tools, safety equipment, and training are provided. 
    * Lunch and snacks are included. 
    * Participants age 16 and older are welcome. Participants under 18 must have parent or guardian consent. 
    * Space is limited, and participants are encouraged to register early. 
    *This build requires a reservation but does not require completion of Habitat's standard volunteer application or volunteer orientation process. 

    Schedule

    8:30 am — Arrive, check in, safety briefing, and task assignments
    10:30 am — Morning break
    12:00 pm — Lunch break
    1:30 pm — Afternoon break
    3:15 pm — Start clean-up
    3:45 pm — End of workday. Remember to sign out before you leave.

    * Wear layers in case the weather changes during the day; you may want to bring a change of clothes. Long pants and close-toed shoes (no slide-ons) are required on the construction site. Choose shoes that are comfortable, since you will be on your feet for most of the day.
    * Safety and protective equipment, including masks, gloves, goggles, earplugs, and hardhats, will be available on site. You are welcome to bring your own, but all personal equipment must pass an inspection by the site supervisor before use. You are also welcome to bring your own hand tools, or tool belt, though none of that is required. Any tools you bring must pass a visual inspection before use on site.

    Getting there:
    ***Please park at the Haines Place Park and Ride at 440 12th Street rather than on the street near the site.***
    From Sims Way, turn at the light onto Haines Place toward the park and ride. Turn left at the four-way stop onto 12th Street and enter the park and ride.
    From the park and ride, the walk to the site is about a quarter mile: head north on Landes Street, turn west on 14th Street, then north on Landes Terrace. You will see the site straight ahead.

    Please note that Habitat construction sites are closed to guests. Only registered participants will be allowed on the job site.

    This build requires a reservation, but not a volunteer application or orientation.

    However, if you would like to participate in regularly scheduled activities on the Habitat jobsite, please complete an application at https://habitatejc.org/new-volunteers, followed by an orientation to receive the shift password.
